Saturday Community Kitchen
The Community Kitchen has been in operation in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit for more than 23 years. As a result of declining government services and increasing resident need, the church started a lunch program that currently serves 150-300 people every week. Some drive or take the bus, but the vast majority of our guests walk from the local neighborhoods or from the Neighborhood Services Organization and Detroit Rescue Mission, two area shelters.
The meal is served each week by congregations or other types of service groups on a rotating basis. Some serve once a month, others three to four times per year. The network of groups has become strong over the years, with some organizations entering and exiting the program regularly as their needs and calls lead them. Annual schedules are made in January, but there is always room for more participation from new groups throughout the year. Each group is responsible for planning the meal and preferably bringing their own food supplies, though paper products, drinks and limited supplies of food are provided. Food planning can be worked out on an individual basis.
Individual volunteers are also welcome. Simply let us know and we can accommodate. The best way to know about Hope to Cope is to come down and see for yourself! Walk in any Saturday between noon and 1:30 or schedule a visit or a conversation with our coordinators. We are available at 313-964-3113. Volunteers and financial support are always appreciated. We support the ministry through small donations from Spirit of Hope, supporting individuals and churches, and through an annual boat cruise fundraiser on the Detroit River in May. May God bless you as you continue to bless others.
Sunday Food Pantry
The Hope To Cope Food Pantry, in operation for eight years, serves forty families every Sunday at 10 a.m. We provide a grocery bag full of items including non-perishables, meats, vegetables, fruits, deserts and bread. Guests are required to bring some form of identification, and may return up to twice per month, though the pantry is open every Saturday.
The Food Pantry is supported through donations from Spirit of Hope as well as donor churches. We are a partner with Gleaners Community Food Bank and Forgotten Harvest, two Southeast Michigan food bank distributors. Financial support and food donations are always accepted. For more information, contact Spirit of Hope at 313-964-3113. May God bless you as you continue to bless others.
